There are a number of different spellings and variations of our Clewell surname.
The surname, Clewell, is a Pennsylvania Dutch (German) corruption of the original French surname, Clavell.
Other varients that I've seen in the first "Clewell Family History," published in 1907, are: Klewell, Clawell, Clavelt, Klawelder.
In the first US Census, the enumerator (the person who recorded the information) wrote our surname the way he/she heard it: Claywell!
So, yes, there are several varients of our surname, and yet, to the best of my knowldedge, all US Clewells are related; originating from our earliest know parents: Francois and Louisa (Frache) Clavell. We now have just over 22,500 names in our Clewell genealogy (Clewells and Non-Clewell spouses).
